Work in progress: Arizona road trip

This past weekend in the Trinity Alps I professed my love to Dave… my love for road trips.

I explained to him how I love driving through and exploring random small towns, using Yelp to find good local restaurants, staying at borderline ghetto motels, purchasing chintzy souvenirs and finding ways to meet and chat with locals.

I convinced him that we should forgo Christmas presents for each other this year and use the holiday time off for a road trip. Given the time of year and weather forecasts for the closest states to us, we decided a thorough exploration of Arizona would be appropriate.

I put Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument and Four Corners Monument on my must do list. Dave added Sedona and Tucson. We also decided that even though we want to do a backpack trip in the Grand Canyon, we need to at least stop by and check it out if we’re in the area.

I’ve done a little bit of research (already!) and mapped out a tentative route.

I’ve identified some additional stops, including Saguaro National Park, Canyon de Chelly National Monument and Monument Valley.  I’d also like to find a plane boneyard, if possible.

Have you spent a lot of time in Arizona? Where should we go? What should we see? What small towns are the best to explore? SEND ME YOUR SECRETS!

  1. OMG, you have to go back to Sedona! Also, I am very jealous of the fact that you may be going to the Organ Pipe Cactus National Mounument without me. Wonder if it will be better than petrified forest?
